The John Moores competition is Britain's leading contemporary painting exhibition.
It is open to artists living or based in the UK. This year, for the first time, slides rather than original works were submitted. This made the competition more open and accessible than ever before. It also resulted in one of the most exciting shows so far.
This year's judges were artists Fiona Rae and Jenny Saville and artist / writer Matthew Collings.
Over 5,000 entries were received. Thirty eight paintings have made the final show. The winner will receive a prize of 25,000 and their painting will join Walker Art Gallery's prestigious contemporary collection. Four other prizewinners will each receive 2,500. All the works from the exhibition can be seen here.
